The Way Ahead
As Christians we are committed to the Church, its life and its mission. We base all our beliefs and behaviour on the clear teaching of scripture and, specifically in relation to the Church, on the passage in the Acts of the Apostles chapter 2 verses 41-47. This passage sets out how the early Christians lived in fellowship and we can discern from it the principles that underlay the life and work of the early church and that accounted for its growth and success.
We will seek, with God's help, to be the kind of living, growing and spirit-filled community that brings glory to the Lord Jesus Christ and attracts others to Him.
There are four emphases that mark out the life of the early church. The first two of these relate to our duty to God and the final two to our duty to our neighbour. Like the early church we would like to be:
- A WORSHIPPING CHURCH (Verse 42)
- "They continued ….in the breaking of bread and in prayers"
- A LEARNING CHURCH (Verse 42)
- "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching"
- A CARING CHURCH (Verse 45)
- "They sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men as everyone had need"
- AN EVANGELIZING CHURCH (Verse 47)
- "And the Lord added daily to the church such as should be saved"
It is our conviction that, whilst society, culture, traditions and conventions change from generation to generation, the love and grace of the living God do not change. We believe that as we remain in fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ and faithful to the teaching of his word we will enjoy his blessing. As members of the Church of Scotland we are the inheritors of a good legacy from the past. We desire to maintain a faithful witness in our own day. Finally, it is our prayer that we will hand on a living, vibrant and expanding church in the future.
